Educating Kids about Robots - Volunteer Work

Basic educational robots these days can do kung-fu.

This weekend, I served as a volunteer at the Sin-wol community center, where my primary role was to assist children, aged 8 to 15, in interacting with robots. The center featured two humanoid robots and several drones, designed for educational and service functions.

Humanoids were made by JM Robotics, sourced from UBTECH Robotics, China's leading humanoid manufacturer. JM Robotics imports these robots and customizes their language and software for use in Korea. Alpha Mini, was equipped with Naver's Clova AI system, enabling it to understand and respond to human voice commands and interactions.

I observed a noticeable delay in the system's response time. When activating Alpha Mini with "Hey, Clova," it took 2-3 seconds to respond, leading to frequent misunderstandings. The children, accustomed to the immediate response of assistants like Siri, Alexa, Bixby, or Google Assistant, would quickly state their requests after the call sign. I instructed the children about the robot's delayed reaction time to address this.
